I would like to extend my best wishes to all the journalists, editors and publishers gathered for the conference celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Quebec Community Newspapers Association.
As Canadians, we are proud of our diversity—our many stories, traditions, backgrounds and our two official languages. Our government also firmly believes that a strong Canada depends on a free, open and independent media.
That is why we are committed to support community newspapers in official language minority communities across the country. Your work in supporting our English-speaking communities in Quebec is essential. By showcasing their stories with sincerity and honesty, you help ensure that Canadians are well-informed, represented and seen. This empowers them to contribute fully to our society.
As Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, I wish you all a productive gathering in beautiful Montebello!
